John MacKechnie graduated from Glasgow School of Art in 1971 and did a Post Graduate in printmaking at Brighton Polytechnic between 1971-1973. These works are part of an ongoing water series which begun in 2002, mostly from the North West Highlands of Scotland in the area between Arisaig and Mallaig. The works are built up using transparent, translucent and opaque colours often building up and taking back as a painter might often do with oil on canvas. The starting point is photography and he has used a similar approach in practically all his work since the 1970s. Since 1983 MacKechnie has been the director of the Glasgow Print Studio.
