8 September - 31 October 2020
Overview

David Eustace took his first photograph of Byrne in 1989. John has since become his most revisited subject.

Taken over a thirty year period, the limited edition portfolio features twelve striking photographic portraits of John Byrne. Exclusive to Glasgow Print Studio, is one further portrait, specially commissioned for this presentation. This work is available to purchase as a stand- alone piece, while the others are only available as part of the limited edition portfolio.

Eustace refers to this body of work as a "very personal portfolio" containing twelve of his favourite portraits of a "cherished and wonderful pal." He reflects that the portraits "form cherished memories and moments combined within a frame that offer an insight of a bigger picture."

Sir Angus Grossart, Former Chairman of The National Galleries of Scotland and Former Chairman of The National Museums of Scotland has commented that "David observes over 30 years of John’s evolving appearance with acute sensitivity and wit. Each photograph is a chronicle of the time and the man, which has a universality and humanity to which we can all relate.”

David Eustace is a Scottish photographer and director, who is known for his fashion, celebrity and art photography. His photographs are included in the collections of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and the Glasgow Museum of Modern Art.

The edition Dear John is printed on handmade Japanese paper, presented in a handmade clamshell archival box and includes four hand inked and hand pulled letterpress sheets.
