40/40 is a suite of prints created in 2013 celebrating Glasgow Print Studio's 40 years in existence. 40 artists associated with Glasgow Print Studio were invited to make editions of 40 prints in whatever print medium they chose.
This is a print of that iconic Glasgow image, the doocot. Marvels of improvised building from scrap material, they are found on waste ground from the industrial past. This doocot and the small bothy, where a few cans of lager could be shared, was near the south side of Ruchill Park but has been knocked down. The Glasgow pigeons are not the racing variety found in the old mining areas of Scotland but pouter pigeons. The cock attracts hen pigeons from other doocots and thus a macho element is introduced to this working, or rather out-of-work, Glasgow pastime.
John Taylor began working as an editioning screen printer at the Print Studio in 1973. He has had four solo exhibitions in the Gallery since 1978.
