Alex Frost was born in London, England in 1973. Frost studied fine art at Staffordshire University (BA 1995) and Glasgow School of Art (MFA 1998). Frost is known for linking computerised and handmade approaches in process-based self-portraits. The modular repetition and hand-pixelated effect of Frost’s self portrait Layered Blind Drawing 2 (2008) was achieved via a variation of Frost’s ‘Blind Drawing’ technique. This term is part description of the process and allusion to the blank depiction of the subjects depicted and reference to the Braille-like effect of the resulting surface. Frost’s ‘Blind Drawings' are part of an ongoing series started in 2006. They are made using a process that sits between drawing, painting and photography where the image is perforated into the paper and rendered by paint brushed through these punctures. A digital sensibility is paired with an analogue process. To create Layered Blind Drawing 2 Frost developed an innovative technique which would allow him to create editions of the same image via the use of a printing press.
In 2008 he published and exhibited a print edition at Glasgow Print Studio for the exhibition titled “To bring forth and give”, a print project by artists represented by Sorcha Dallas Gallery.
Emerging from Scotland's artist led scene in the late 1990s with projects such as The Collective in Edinburgh, Glasgow's Transmission and Switchspace, and Generator Projects in Dundee, Alex Frost developed into a prominent, respected artist exhibiting nationally and internationally. In 2009 Frost was short-listed for the Jerwood Sculpture Prize and was selected by Artsway for the Venice Biennale.
