40/40 is a suite of prints created in 2013 celebrating Glasgow Print Studio's 40 years in existence. 40 artists associated with Glasgow Print Studio were invited to make editions of 40 prints in whatever print medium they chose.
The figure in this print bears the characteristic and exaggerated facial features of the artist, with a distinctive profile of triangular nose and large moustache(?). This is a screenprint with hand coloured elements, so each print in the edition is slightly different. The artist has used a watercolour pencil for hand colouring, which can provide either a soft pencil line or a wash if water is added.
John Byrne has worked with Glasgow Print Studio since the 1970s. The first print editioned by the Print Studio was a Byrne lithograph and his play ‘Writer’s Cramp’ debuted in the Print Studio’s Ingram Street Gallery in 1977
