40/40 is a suite of prints created in 2013 celebrating Glasgow Print Studio's 40 years in existence. 40 artists associated with Glasgow Print Studio were invited to make editions of 40 prints in whatever print medium they chose.
Images of antique paper ephemera and contemporary digital techniques are combined in this print. The background is made up of a selection of scanned French manuscripts from the 17th and 18th Century and First World War French postcards, found by the artist in junk shops abroad. Despite their status as ‘ephemera’, they are resonant as documents of lives lived and passed. The trees and flowers are based on photographs taken around Glasgow. There are 40 birds in the print based on images from old cigarette cards and natural history books which have been redrawn and altered.
Fiona Watson began printmaking around 1993, after completing Master Etcher Stuart Duffin’s evening class. She has had five solo exhibitions in the Gallery since 1998.
