I started making paintings of my mother, Janet, in 2019, the same year that I became a mother myself. The paintings show Janet as she undertakes her daily domestic tasks; cooking, cleaning, tidying and tending the garden of the Fife home where I spent my childhood. I wanted to make visible and draw attention to the continual work required to keep a household running, that is so often overlooked.
Stock Check, Morning, December depicts Janet reviewing the contents of her fridge, with her plans for the coming week’s meals in mind. In Pottering, Late Evening, March she is tidying up in the green house, illuminated in the pink evening light.
