Moyna Flannigan

Moyna Flannigan was born in 1963 in Kirkcaldy, Scotland. She graduated from Edinburgh College of Art with a BA in 1985, and from Yale University School of Art with a MFA in 1987. Following her studies, she became a lecturer of painting at Glasgow School of Art in 1995.

Flannigan’s work is characterised by an exuberant imaginative energy, black humour and a probing critique of the effects of power on personal, cultural and political alienation in the modern world. Her paintings, works on paper and miniatures reflect the psychological crisis created in the individual by the distorted values of a world dominated by celebrity, financial greed, self-serving political and religious posturing, and are drawn from a huge range of reference points: from art history, film and popular culture. Her work is held in major collections across the UK, including the Saatchi Collection and the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art.

The Blind House is a series of etchings published by Glasgow Print Studio in 2008, which were part of a body of work produced with the support of a Creative Scotland Award presented to Flannigan. The first part of the award, a series of paintings reflecting a fictional, contemporary political dynasty, were shown as an intervention in the historical collection at Mount Stuart, Isle of Bute. Flannigan then produced further related works including the suite of eight etching editions published by GPS.
