David Shrigley, OBE, was born in 1968 in Macclesfield, England. He studied environmental art at Glasgow School of Art between 1988-1991.
Shrigley works encommpasses a range of media including sculpture, large-scale installation, animation, painting, printmaking, photography and music. He is best known for his distinctive drawing style that satirically comments on everyday situations and human interactions. The banal text observations directed toward the viewer, the seemingly casual composition and the surreal, burnt-black humour, is typical of Shrigley’s work.
In 2013 he was shortlisted for the Turner Prize following his major mid-career retrospective at the Hayward Gallery, London entitled “Brain Activity”. Shrigley was awarded an OBE for his service to visual arts in 2020.
