This print was created in conjunction with the Glasgow Print Studio 50th Anniversary Here & Now Legacy Project. "Historically I have travelled to find inspiration from architectural structures all over the world, finding that a sense of unfamiliarity makes the subject matter all the more intriguing to me. I then use drawing to explore and try to further understand the original subject matter. Lockdown put a stop to my travel and slowly, my eyes were opened to my local surroundings. This etching is based on a garden wall near where I live which is made from precast concrete blocks. I became interested in the new meaning of boundaries during lockdown, where suddenly the perameter of properties meant so much more, and all of our worlds shrank to exist predominantly within the confines of our homes."
Bronwen Sleigh was born in Birmingham in 1980 and raised in Mid-Wales. Sleigh received her BA in illustration from the Glasgow School of Art in 2002 and her MA in Fine Art Printmaking from the Royal College of Art in 2008. Sleigh works in printmaking, drawing and sculpture, taking inspiration from manmade structures set within a wide variety of landscapes. She investigates attitudes to space as expressed through architecture and its relationship to the landscape. The multiple processes of her practice bring abstraction to the original subject. Sleigh has been connected with Glasgow Print Studio since graduating from her BA in 2002, starting out as a member of the gallery staff. She is now a workshop member, using the workshop on a regular basis.
