40/40 is a suite of prints created in 2013 celebrating Glasgow Print Studio's 40 years in existence. 40 artists associated with Glasgow Print Studio were invited to make editions of 40 prints in whatever print medium they chose.
This study from life is a departure from the artist’s usual subject matter of architecture and abstract forms. It depicts the artist’s dog in his favourite chair at home, shown against an abstracted backdrop. With a background in technical graphics and illustration, Ian McNicol began to include colour in his work following a 3 month exchange to Mumbai in 2000. This is a one plate etching inked à la poupée, meaning that the areas of different colour were all inked on the plate at the same time.
Ian began printmaking classes at the Print Studio in 1993 and has been working for the organisation since 1996 as a tutor and editioning printer. He has had three solo exhibitions in the Gallery since 1998.
