40/40 is a suite of prints created in 2013 celebrating Glasgow Print Studio's 40 years in existence. 40 artists associated with Glasgow Print Studio were invited to make editions of 40 prints in whatever print medium they chose.
Jerusalem has been a key source of inspiration for Stuart since his first visit in 1996. Fascinated by the city’s burden of historical and contemporary baggage he has returned several times, including two, one month long residencies at the Jerusalem Print Workshop this year. This print is a triptych, with an etched plate at the centre and two mezzotint plates at the sides. Stuart specialises in mezzotint, a time-intensive technique where the plate is first given a fine texture all over and then areas to be printed in lighter tones are burnished (smoothed out).
Stuart began working at the Print Studio as a member in 1982 and is currently Master Etcher. He has had four solo exhibitions in the Gallery since 1989 and is also exhibiting in 2013.
