Toby Paterson is a Glasgow based artist whose work explores experience of place through architecture and modernist approaches to design and urbanism.

‘Palimpsest’ is a screenprint created for his solo exhibition “Remnant” presented at Glasgow Print Studio in 2013. His source photograph came from Anderston, Glasgow, when a large section of the 1960’s/1970’s CDA housing was being cleared. “It was the original signage that had been hidden behind something layered over the top in the ‘80s. I pass that site almost everyday on the way to the studio, it’s one of those disappeared landmarks for me”

As the Workshop Manager my job is often is to pair an artist with a Master Printer whose specialist skills and communication style will fit what the artist is hoping to produce. In this case, it was clear that the image would work best as a very fine photographic screenprint which is my own my specialist skill.

I was delighted to work with Toby to produce this edition, which we made using CMYK separations with very fine random dots, using low exposures to hold the detail. We added silver highlights on the text as the end stage, using metallic ink.
