To collaborate and edition this screenprint was extremely exciting as she is someone I have always looked upon and read about, A few years back I read a book called abstraction “Documents of Contemporary Art” a collection of essays where I learned more about her process and it brought a new perspective to me. it allowed me to understand more about the link from sculptor to printmaker and installation…

Whilst working together there was immediately an element of trust and knowing of the others process. We already shared a similar working practice about how we arrive at the finished piece

The spontaneity where everything is in motion until it is resolved and our similar working methods were apparent from the beginning. Claire’s fearless use of black was possibly the only thing I wasn’t completely familiar in working with - so this experience became extremely liberating because we already had a similar process of layering and reacting - this time it was with black.

40/40 is a suite of prints created in 2013 celebrating Glasgow Print Studio's 40 years in existence. 40 artists associated with Glasgow Print Studio were invited to make editions of 40 prints in whatever print medium they chose.

Repetition of a simple, abstract shape forms the basis of this screenprint. The pared down form could refer to an object, a void or a natural shape, its origins are deliberately obscure. The image was developed through a process of editing and revision, using paper stencils to create layers of translucent black shapes in various configurations. This tension between transparency and density is a key element in the image. Although Barclay is best known as a sculptor, her approach to printmaking is closely related to her sculptural practice, working with forms in space.

Claire Barclay had a joint exhibition in the Print Studio Gallery with Christine Borland in 2002 and a solo show in 2010 as part of Glasgow International visual arts festival.
