40/40 is a suite of prints created in 2013 celebrating Glasgow Print Studio's 40 years in existence. 40 artists associated with Glasgow Print Studio were invited to make editions of 40 prints in whatever print medium they chose.
A number of techniques are combined in this screenprint, from flat colour created by collaging hand-cut pieces of card, to painterly marks and a hand drawn line. Every print in this edition has a unique element – a yellow shape made with a palette knife to represent a potato. The artist describes this print as “an attempt to make a new sculpture backwards, starting with a card sculpture, a potato sculpture, photographing, Xeroxing, printing , then painting and then re-photographing, then making a silkscreen print”. He also plans a film relating to the subject.
The Print Studio printed a screenprint for Bruce McLean’s 1980 exhibition at Third Eye Centre, Glasgow and he was later invited to make monoprints and an etching in the mid 1980s.
