40/40 is a suite of prints created in 2013 celebrating Glasgow Print Studio's 40 years in existence. 40 artists associated with Glasgow Print Studio were invited to make editions of 40 prints in whatever print medium they chose.

The dual image within this screenprint, of Can rehearsing at Schloss Nörvenich and of Aldo Van Eyck’s seminal orphanage, speaks to the artist of a transcendental formalism, of both play and rigour, process and chance, that in Van Eyck’s words, creates a ‘labyrinthine clarity.' The work meditates on the possibilities unlocked by the composition of seemingly simple elements. The outcome of such endeavours is that it may offer beacons for times when Van Eyck’s observation, that ‘we know nothing of vast multiplicity - we cannot come to grips with it’ , threatens to become too much to bear.

Under the influence of his grandfather Lennox, Toby Paterson's first experience of Glasgow Print Studio was at the age of six. Since then he has curated a group exhibition in 2005, Prisms and Shadows, has exhibited his own work in the 2012 solo show Remnant and produced a suite of prints in collaboration with GPS.
