40/40 is a suite of prints created in 2013 celebrating Glasgow Print Studio's 40 years in existence. 40 artists associated with Glasgow Print Studio were invited to make editions of 40 prints in whatever print medium they chose.

When Alison Watt was commissioned by the Uffizi to create a self-portrait for the collection, she began to think about the nature of self-portraiture itself, and she realised that there had always been an element of it in her painting. From the very beginning when she would stand in front of the mirror and paint herself obsessively, to the more subtle representations of self which are present in the work now. Much of the artist's work is about the transformation of an object into an idea and how the two elements of object and self often merge. This print was made as part of the 40/40 exhibition in 2013, to mark 40 years of Glasgow Print Studio. 40 artists were each invited to make an edition of 40 prints, which was exhibited at Glasgow Print Studio from 24th August to 13th October 2013.
