When Stanley Kubrick’s film, 2001 A Space Oddyssey, was released in 1968, 2001 was so far in the future and the future seemed so uncertain. The reality is that 2001 is probably not so different from 1968. However, such was the impact of the film that 2001 is lodged in our collective psyche as having considerable futuristic significance.
From this beginning Glasgow Print Studio took the idea of space as a concept that contemporary artists could respond to. Thirty-three artists in total accepted the invitation to make works using any form of print media and they were asked interpret space as widely as possible whilst remaining relevant to their current practice.
Glasgow Print Studio published two portfolios of original prints by twelve of the invited artists who have collaborated with the studio’s master printers on this project. Two additional portfolios were created by compiling works by various artists who were members of the Glasgow Print Studio at the time.
The Red Space Portfolio consists of prints by Harry Magee ("Cityspace", photopolymer intaglio), Norman Mathieson ("The Area Between", screenprint), Will Maw ("A Modern Space", screenprint), Jackie Moon ("Rainy Spain", etching), David Palmer ("Armet", etching), Robert Paul ("Space", screenprint), Jila Peacock ("Goldfish in Space", etching), Norman Sutton-Hibbert ("Five Moons", linocut), David Traynor ("God Speed You Mr Spaceman", etching), Fiona Watson ("Solar System", etching) and Eveleen Wright ("Pillar of Wisdom", etching).
