This print was created in conjunction with the Glasgow Print Studio 50th Anniversary Here & Now Legacy Project. The title is 'Passing Arran, Rain Following' and was developed from sketches made crossing from Ardrossan to Campbeltown. The print forms part of a larger group of paintings and prints to be shown together. The focus is on the Arran coast near Brodick with craggy brooding mountains sweeping down to the sea, contrasting with the gentler slopes to the North.

The print is on steel with aquatint. The prepared plate was polished to reduce unwanted plate tone followed by application of hard ground. Line and shape were etched onto the plate with stop-out added to secure light areas, essential for tonal gradation. This was developed by removing hard ground and applying stop-out simultaneously using brushes or rags, with more lines added using a point. As tones developed, aquatint was added, giving depth to the textures, the depths of tone being determined by the etching time. Several proofs were taken prior to printing on Hahnemuhle paper using black with Prussian blue. Limited hints of colour were added by hand.

Gregor Smith was born in Renton, Scotland in 1944. He studied at Edinburgh College of Art between 1962 – 1966 and completed his highly commended Post-Graduate year in 1967. Smith received a traveling scholarship to Italy in 1967. He taught in Central Scotland between 1968 – 2008. In 1983 he was elected RSW. He was a member of Glasgow League of Artists between 1971 – 1978, and a member of Glasgow Group between 1990 – 2008.

Smith has been a member of Glasgow Print Studio since 2000 and has exhibited as the Featured Artist of the month in 2014 and 2018. His work is featured in private and public collections.
