This print was created in conjunction with the Glasgow Print Studio 50th Anniversary Here & Now Legacy Project. The print is inspired by one of the automatic line drawings produced by the artist - fragments of textile, and left over confectionary wrappings, which she has been reluctant to discard. This stems from her interest in material remains, and the way disposal and reuse of such items is managed. The expertise and encouragement of Glasgow Print Studio Master Print Maker, Scott Campbell and Studio Printer Alistair Gow, has given added inspirational value to its development and production. As has the support and encouragement received from the Education and Administration Team at Glasgow Print Studio, without which the production of this print would not have been possible.
Mary Land was born in Hamilton, Lanarkshire in 1948. She studied Liberal Studies at Newbattle Abbey College between 1978-1980, Archaeology at University of Glasgow between 1980-1984, Industrial Archaeology at Ironbridge Institute in 1986, Museum Studies at University of Leicester in 1995, then finally Silver-Smithing and Jewellery at Glasgow School of Art between 2004-2008. She worked as an Industrial Archaeologist and Museum Curator between 1987-2004.
Her artistic practice stems from an interest in industrial processes, the transformation of those processes, and the material remains generated as a result. She was first introduced to Glasgow Print Studio in the early 1990’s when she took up an invitation to an exhibition opening in the gallery there. After learning about the expertise of the staff, and the range of printmaking courses being offered at GPS, she completed a Lithography evening course. Following the completion of a print making evening class at Glasgow School of Art, she became a GPS member around 2017. Her work is produced using the silkscreen printmaking process. Since 2017 she has completed a mezzotint course with GPS Master Print Maker, Stuart Duffin, and a mono-print course with Fiona Wilson.
