This print was created in conjunction with the Glasgow Print Studio 50th Anniversary Here & Now Legacy Project. "My work over the years has always been based on still life, and in particular, jugs. I was invited to create a print for the Glasgow Print Studio’s 40th anniversary exhibition, ‘40/40’, back in 2013 for which I produced an etching and aquatint of a jug called ‘Summer Jug’. Delighted to be invited to create a print for the 50th anniversary exhibition, I decided to revisit the theme and produced ‘Summer Jug II’. This etching and aquatint is basically the same jug, however I have inverted the design on the jug's surface. I also decided to set the jug against a black background and cast a strong shadow over its surface to suggest that the jug is sitting on a window ledge below a blind on a sunny summer day. The choice of colour is influenced by the blue and white china still life objects in paintings by Henri Matisse which I have admired for so long. The print has been created using three separate steel plates. The first is a texture plate to represent the aged surface of the jug, this is printed in grey. The second plate is the decoration on the surface of the jug, it is printed in aquamarine blue, and the final plate is the background and shadow which is printed in black."

David Palmer was born in Glasgow in 1964, a stone's throw from the current location of the Print Studio. He studied Printmaking at Glasgow School of Art from 1982 to 1986. At art school he was drawn towards etching and intaglio processes which he learned under the tuition of Philip Reeves. After art school he joined the Glasgow Print Studio where he continued to produce etchings, but also became a studio printer. This gave him the opportunity to hone his skills as a printer, but also develop a deeper understanding of print quality and print conservation. Teaching then took over his life for the next 33 years, but he continued to produce etchings at the GPS in the evenings, when time allowed. He was invited to join the board of directors of the print studio in 1991 and served on the board for the next 15 years, 10 of those as chair of the board. He retired from teaching at Christmas 2021, and looks forward to spending more of his time producing and exhibiting etchings in the Print Studio over the coming years.
