This print was created in conjunction with the Glasgow Print Studio 50th Anniversary Here & Now Legacy Project. The work presented attempts to explore ideas of change and transformation through time. Each piece is built up over a prolonged drawing period and a network innumerable of lines; each line an index of an action. Each moment of its production builds to create a whole. These lines are etched and reworked considerably to create an almost three-dimensional depth to the plate, and therefore the print. The work explores the relationship between image and object. Recognising the print as a residue of process, the work carries with it an implicate dialogue of duality:

Form and void
Surface and depth
Movement and stillness
Illusion and materiality
Considered and incidental
Duration and instant

The work is developed in series, each subtle change contributing to the individuality of the piece - an individuality reinforced by repetition. Each contains and records the memory of its own making. Each is a body of experience, a vessel of time. A theatre of change.

John Fitzpatrick was born in Scotland in 1977. He studied Fine Art Printmaking BA (hons) at Glasgow School of Art from 1996 to 2000.
He is an artist and educator, and currently works in Further Education.

He joined Glasgow Print Studio in 2000, the week he graduated from GSA. He is a member of the Board and Education Committee, and has exhibited, taught and editioned work through GPS.
