In this image Burns offers a ring to his newly beloved. She is pregnant and the plan is to run off together and form a new life in Jamaica. What follows is that Mary goes to her family to bid a final farewell but on her return to Burns both she and her unborn baby die. Burns is a broken man with no money and no prospects. Then suddenly he finds that his published poems are a huge success in Edinburgh.
