40/40 is a suite of prints created in 2013 celebrating Glasgow Print Studio's 40 years in existence. 40 artists associated with Glasgow Print Studio were invited to make editions of 40 prints in whatever print medium they chose.
An interest in pattern and reflection is found in this screenprint, which is part of an ongoing series of water images begun around 2003. The series includes images from around the world, but this screenprint is based on a photograph of a beach in the North West of Scotland. It has been developed through a considerable editing process, working with hundreds of pictures to select just a few and then using digital manipulation to develop the final piece. The print has up to thirty layers, each responding to the last, with the aim of developing a painterly effect.
John has been Director of Glasgow Print Studio since 1983, after joining the Studio in 1978. He had solo exhibitions in the Gallery in 1999 and 2010.
