This print was created in conjunction with the Glasgow Print Studio 50th Anniversary Here & Now Legacy Project. "WAVES is a direct response to my visual experiences of the Scottish seas. I spend a lot of time walking and drawing in the open. The effects of changing light, the colour of the sky, and the movement and energy of the sea are all elements that I try to capture in my sketches. As with the majority of my work, these sketches became my aide-mémoire and were further developed into this print.
This work was achieved through experimentation of techniques and material. The original image was created using monoprint onto Xuan paper. It was then adhered by chine collé onto Somerset paper when the ink was dry enough to handle. The final work was then scanned and transferred onto a photopolymer plate for etching. The choice of Xuan paper and a Chinese brush that created the flowing strokes naturally arose through the process."
Lin Chau was born in Hong Kong where she spent her early years before relocating to the UK in the 70s, and is now a multidisciplinary artist based in Scotland. Her practice is underpinned by her connection to the world and her environment—be it social, political, or geographical—that she finds herself within. Much of her recent work is concerned with displacement and the passing of time. In addition to drawing as the core of her practice, Chau works with a variety of media from printmaking to filmmaking, continually exploring new creative techniques that invite viewers to consider diverse ways of looking at the interaction of places and landscapes.
Chau became a member of the Glasgow Print Studio in 2016 after graduating from The Glasgow School of Art with a MLitt in Fine Art Practice from Sculpture & Environmental Art and a Bachelor of Fine Art (Hons) in painting and printmaking.
