  • Ed Miliano (Graphic Studio Dublin) was born in New York in 1954 and graduated with a BFA from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. After more than twenty-five years working as a designer and illustrator in the USA and Ireland, he dedicated himself fully to his art practice. A member of Graphic Studio Dublin since 2022, he regularly exhibits at Graphic Studio Gallery and has shown his work extensively throughout Ireland and the United States.

Miliano studied Mokuhanga printmaking in Japan where he lived for four years. Japan had a profound influence on Miliano's work. He was enthralled with the use of gold in Japanese art and architecture, particularly the way it could bring light into a room.

This work evolved from Miliano's observations of nature throughout his career. He developed a technique of printing in black and adding elements of colour onto the black 'skeleton' of his prints. The colour is added mostly in the for of collage. Miliano paints pages of text and cuts them into leaves. He also uses recycled prints and Chiyogami or Japanese printed papers in his work. Almost every print incorporates gold or silver leaf.

On the printed blackbirds, a golden circle shines and becomes the identifiable large eye of the common blackbird. It's elegant shape nestles among the carved trees.
