Overview

Cats are one of humanity's closest companions and have long fascinated and enchanted with their grace, independence, and mysterious nature. The enigmatic cats featured in this series are redolent with accumulated feline wisdom and require that we accept them on their own terms however unusual they may be. Examples here from McVeigh's bestiary range from the esoteric 'Blue Pussy' to the more familiar 'Ginger' and luxuriously textured, exotic 'Leopard'.

McVeigh mastered the techniques of the etched line and aquatint some time ago and he continues to produce engaging and vibrant works in this medium. Of particular note in this series of works is his continuing development in the creation of digital imagery. Michael has spent many hours in the Digital Suite at GPS learning and exploring new techniques of production combining layered textures with the marks of the pen and brush of the drawing tablet.

Michael McVeigh was born in Dundee and studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design from 1977 - 1982. His paintings and prints often depict everyday life in Scotland, but when infused with his own personal perceptions, take on a dreamlike reverie, and are redolent with the light and shade of poetic imagery.

McVeigh lives and works in Edinburgh and echoes of the city's closes, street life and festivals with all its subcultures and traditions are visible in his work, alongside East Coast harbour scenes and pubs, fisherfolk and folk musicians.

McVeigh has exhibited widely over the past three decades with solo shows including at Edinburgh Printmakers, Compass Gallery, Open Eye Gallery and many group exhibitions including at the Scottish Gallery and Highland Printmakers.
