Presenting: Bryan Angus: Trongate 103 Foyer
Glasgow Print Studio presents an exhibition of linocut printmaking from Banff-based visual artist Bryan Angus.
Bryan Angus was born in Aberdeen and studied painting at Gray's School of Art in Aberdeen from 1978 to 1982. For the next 22 years he worked as a community artist, theatre designer, festival director, arts centre manager and an arts officer in Bristol. In 2003, alongside his wife Carla, he established The Creative Retreat, an artist residency centre and art holiday business in Gardenstown. Since then, Angus has been recovering his practice, making his first lino prints in 2012. He has exhibited across the UK and in other countries, and has undertaken residencies, in Istanbul, Norway and Italy. Angus is currently working on illustration projects with writers, on commercial projects, but has retained the focus on his own work.
"In many ways I am a traditional painter and printmaker with the act of observation and drawing being key to my process. I try to represent the richly visual moments we see in the world, effects of light and atmosphere that leave an impression on the memory. I like to think the best of my work has a poetic feel, but living on a beautiful coast and using that as source material I have been wary of making overly sentimental art. I do want to solicit an emotional response from the viewer but more a visceral response to a moment in time, than a vague feeling of recognition and safety. My time as a designer for theatre, and my love of some traditional illustration, has come through in a more fantastic form in some pieces.
This group of pieces represents all the strands of my work; what I see in Scotland, my time on residency in Italy, and imagined places and people that capture my imagination.
