Gregor Smith

Glasgow Print Studio celebrates the life and work of the late Gregor Smith, a deeply respected and much-loved member of our printmaking community, who passed away earlier this year.

Born in Renton and educated at Edinburgh College of Art, Gregor was a painter and printmaker whose work reflected a lifelong sensitivity to Scotland's natural landscapes and ever-changing weather, from dramatic coastal scenes to quiet studies of shifting light and seasonal atmosphere.

Gregor brought a deep integrity and thoughtfulness to everything he created. His sketchbooks, often filled in wild and wintry conditions, were the first stage of a process that translated the rawness of nature into poetic and atmospheric compositions. His work resonated with viewers for its sense of place, mood, and quiet power.

He was selected as one of the artists in Between Islands, a 2023 collaborative exhibition with Graphic Studio Dublin and exhibited in both Dublin and Glasgow. The works Gregor created for this show represented a high-water mark in his printmaking and his growing mastery of mezzotint. In appropriate recognition, Sound of Jura was acquired by the National Galleries of Ireland.

"Information for printing and painting is sketched on site mainly around Scotland during Autumn to Spring. The site may be on land where the drawing can be more exact or at sea where a rapid response to the subject is best. Working outside has to be achievable, especially where high winds are not uncommon. Drawing materials are kept to a few, mainly soluble graphite sticks, selected pastel earth colours, a small sponge and some heavy-duty bulldog clips. The sketchbook is carried in a plastic folder with hardboard backing. Location, day, date and time are noted and the sketch annotated both on site or later if required. Winter weather brings its own dramatic backcloth, precipitation and turbulence, vanishings."

More than his achievements, Gregor will be remembered for his warmth, generosity, and gentle humour. He was a valued member of our artistic family, always supportive, always curious, and always quietly working, sketchbook in hand.

We are honoured to present this posthumous exhibition of Gregor's work, a tribute to his remarkable career and enduring presence within our community.
